「Naganuma Local Food 」

PIEME is an Australian Pie and Coffee shop started in Naganuma, Hokkaido.

Naganuma is a village next door to both Chitose and Sapporo City. The town has wide fields, typical of Hokkaido, and on the eastern side of the town there is a small hill, Maoi Hills.

Our logo professes “Maoi Local Food”.  Maoi is the Ainu name for our town and the surrounding area. The indigenous Ainu people have a strong connection to this land, and the abundant native fruits, vegetables, berries and plants - something that we admire and aspire to. This is a beautiful and rich place.

Spring in Naganuma is full of bird calls and new growth

Summer brings delicious vegetables and fruit.

In autumn, the fields turn golden and peak harvest is celebrated.

With winter, everything is covered by snow and our world resembles a shiny white marble.

Karl, an Australian, and Naohiro, a Hokkaido local, started the shop as a joint venture.

Although meat pies are common in many cuisines, here in Japan they are somewhat novel. Our idea when opening PieMe was to share not only what we think a good pie should be, but what should go with it - espresso based coffee, good music and art - and of course tomato sauce!

As one of the true tastes of home for us, we also hope that PieMe Pies will become a taste of home for the children who grow up here.

Australian Soul Food

Karl, PieMe’s Australian owner, has adapted his grandmother's recipe for the house standard Meat Pie. It’s made with organically farmed Naganuma flour, Hokkaido Holstein beef, Hokkaido butter & heritage onions. Hokkaido beef bones, vegetables and herbs are simmered for over 12 hours to make a bone broth foundation. On the coldest days we serve this broth as a stand-alone soup. All our stews and fillings are made from scratch - this is real ‘slow fast food.’

Our base pastry is suet crust. Made with Hokkaido butter and tallow (rendered beef fat). There’s no shortcuts. When we explain this, some people are surprised to hear that we do it the same way our grandparents did - just with a few wiz bang tools they didn’t have!

Thanks for considering a PieMe Pie.

We’re proud of our pies, and look forward to showing you what a real Australian Pie tastes like, albeit in Hokkaido, Japan! We hope you enjoy it.
